چکیده

Differential distribution of nonbreeding Least Sandpipers (Calidris minutilla) according to sex, bill, and wing length was documented using capture data from six locations between California and Ecuador. The distribution of age classes did not vary with latitude. Females, which are slightly larger than males, migrated further south. Wing length increased toward the south for both males and females, which is consistent with the notion that longer wings are adaptive for longer migrations. Bill length also increased in both sexes from north to south. A latitudinal cline in prey burying depth may underlie the clines in bill length as well as in sex ratio. SINOPSIS.

Latitudinal clines in food distribution correlate with differential migration in the Western Sandpiper.

We report that a latitudinal cline in intertidal food distribution is associated with the nonbreeding distribution of the Western Sandpiper (Calidris mauri). This novel result is the first to demonstrate a clear relationship between patterns of differential nonbreeding distribution and food availability for any shorebird species. Within each age class and sex, longer-billed Western Sandpipers w...

Latitudinal clines in bill length and sex ratio in a migratory shorebird: a case of resource partitioning?

Sexual segregation outside the mating season is common in vertebrates. This has been shown to arise through resource partitioning in a number of taxa, but never in avian migrants. Western sandpipers (Calidris mauri) are migratory shorebirds that mainly breed in Alaska and overwinter along the coast in western and eastern North America down into South America. Females are slightly larger than ma...

The Long and the Short of It: No Dietary Specialisation between Male and Female Western Sandpipers Despite Strong Bill Size Dimorphism

Many bird species show spatial or habitat segregation of the sexes during the non-breeding season. One potential ecological explanation is that differences in bill morphology favour foraging niche specialisation and segregation. Western sandpipers Calidris mauri have pronounced bill size dimorphism, with female bills averaging 15% longer than those of males. The sexes differ in foraging behavio...

Comparison of Quantitative Traits in Latitudinal Populations of Drosophila Kikkawai: Wild Vs Lab Populations

The quantitative characters in Drosophila such as body size or fecundity, are very sensitive to environmental changes e.g. temperature or larval nutrition under laboratory conditions. In nature, the same situation is found where changes in annual temperature or humidity affect the type of flora as well as the size of Drosophila, fauna. In the present studies, we found that latitudinal clines ex...

Disproportionate bill length dimorphism and niche differentiation in wintering western sandpipers

Western sandpipers (Calidris mauri (Cabanis, 1857)) exhibit slight female-biased sexual size dimorphism (5%) but disproportionate bill length dimorphism (15.9%). We test two predictions of the niche differentiation hypothesis at two wintering sites in Mexico with uniform western sandpiper densities, and use sex ratio as an index of intersexual competition. First, to test whether bill length dim...
